Do you think Earth’s continents and oceans will look the same in the future as they do now? Why or why not?
Earth’s plates are constantly moving, yet Earth’s surface looks relatively the same each day. Why don’t we observe changes to Earth’s surface every day?
The Earth’s continents and oceans will likely not look the same in the future. This is because tectonic plates are constantly shifting due to geological processes. Over millions of years, this can lead to significant changes in the arrangement of continents and the shape of ocean basins. For instance, continents can drift apart or collide, forming new mountains or ocean features.
We don’t observe changes to the Earth’s surface every day because these processes occur very slowly. The movement of tectonic plates happens at a rate of only a few centimeters per year, which is too gradual for us to notice in our daily lives. Additionally, many changes, such as erosion or volcanic activity, might take years or even centuries to become visible. Thus, while change is ongoing, it is typically imperceptible on a short timescale.
