Stretched before us in every direction were miles of green. The morning sun grew hotter by the minute, so we stopped under the shade of a cluster of scraggly trees—then we heard a woman’s voice, sweet and soft, coming from the brush behind us.
1. “You must be exhausted and melting in this heat—”
2. “We need to get to Hacienda Dorada—can you help us?”
3. “I would drive you,” she said, “but I don’t have a car. I just have the thing.”
