Kangaroos are mammals that live in arid, vast areas of Australia, or the “Outback.” Like bunnies, kangaroos mostly hop to travel from one place to another. Unlike bunnies, however, kangaroos have large tails used for balance and steering and can hop up to speeds of 40 miles per hour! The largest type of kangaroo, known as the red kangaroo, can jump as high as 10 feet and as far as 25 feet. Kangaroos can weigh up to 200 pounds but are born about the size of a worm. They are known as “marsupials,” an animal that carries its young around in a pouch, and they usually have one “joey,” or baby kangaroo, each year. After about eight months, a joey is ready to hop around Outback Australia with its parents.

Kangaroos are grazing herbivore mammals that live in Australia. They have two strong back legs used for hopping and a long, strong tail that helps them steer and balance as they move. Since kangaroos are nocturnal, or active mostly at night, they have sharp vision and hearing. Their ears are able to swivel on their heads, giving them the ability to pick up sounds from all directions. Kangaroos graze on grass and leaves, and need very little water to survive. They are able to go without water for months as they live in the dry, vast space known as the Australian Outback. Many animals are not capable of surviving such dry areas; leaving more room in the Outback for kangaroos to hop in!
