The Roman Republic had three branches of government. These were:
1. Magistrates – Elected officials, such as consuls and praetors, who were responsible for implementing laws and administrating the state.
2. Senate – A body composed of the aristocracy that advised magistrates and controlled financial policies and foreign relations.
3. Popular Assemblies – These were gatherings of citizens who voted on laws and elected magistrates.
This division was designed to ensure a system of checks and balances within the government.
