The road to that interesting conclusion involved Pennebaker’s work with therapeutic (helpful) writing. Over the years, studies have shown that people who keep traumatic secrets (something embarrassing or painful to remember) or who are going through emotional events (divorce, job loss, school anxiety) tend to have more health problems than other people. Writing down these experiences and memories can be powerfully therapeutic. Pennebaker’s experiments with groups of college students and others show that writing about an emotional issue for 15 or 20 minutes each day over four or five days seems to have the best effect.
