Rationalize the difference in boiling points in each pair:
CHCL3 (61 °C)
and
CHBr3 (150 °C)
Answer
We need to know what makes the given two molecules boiling point differently.
For this problem we have,
- CHCl3: 61 °C
- CHBr3: 150 °C
We can say that CHBr3 has a higher boiling point than CHCl3.
The reason for that is CHBr3 has a greater molecular weight.
If the molecule has a greater molecular weight then there is greater polarizability resulting in a more strong dispersive force.
